Even when there’s no big festival happening, there’s often lots of textile events happening across Kirklees.
Holocaust Centre North is showcasing an exhibition of work by their first artists-in-residence.
Through the Memorial Gestures Residency Programme, three artists have been invited to explore Holocaust Centre North’s archive. This contains the stories of 100+ Jewish refugees and Holocaust survivors who made new lives in the North of England.
Artist Laura Fisher has explored the important role textiles played in some families’ lives. Working with Elinor Sykes from the University of Huddersfield, Laura has created knitted blankets for visitors to look at, touch and wrap around themselves.
“The designs of these blankets are based on artefacts that are part of the collection at Holocaust Centre North. Conveying messages of warmth, hope, and solidarity, and facilitated by organisations such as the Red Cross, these letters and telegrams were often the only means of communication allowed between concentration camp prisoners and their loved ones in the outside world.”
Open 10am – 5pm, Monday – Thursday only.
