Even when there’s no big festival happening, there’s often lots of textile events happening across Kirklees.
The film follows the experience of a grieving husband, who honours the life of his wife by spinning and weaving the fibre of foraged stinging nettles into a dress.
This is one of 35 preview screenings across the UK, ahead of the film’s nationwide release in September 2023. So far, the documentary has been a word-of-mouth success, playing to packed houses and winning the Audience Award at the Brighton Cinecity Film Festival.
Allan Brown is a textile artist and father of four. When his wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer, his foraging, spinning and weaving took on new meaning and provided solace. The dress took seven years to complete and is woven with 14,400 feet of thread, each one representing hours of devoted attention.
Actor Sir Mark Rylance says: “The Nettle Dress is an exquisite, inspiring film.”
