Knitting & Crochet Guild

A National Heritage Treasure

WOVEN is very fortunate that the national charity, The Knitting & Crochet Guild have their Collection housed in Kirklees, at Britannia Mill in the historic village Slaithwaite.

The Knitting & Crochet Guild (KCG) is dedicated to hand knitting, domestic machine knitting and crochet, it is run by volunteers and supported by subscriptions and donations.

Like WOVEN, community is at the heart of their ethos and they aim to bring together enthusiastic yarn creatives from across the Globe. They are passionate about taking their crafts into the future while respecting the traditions and skills of the past. They encourage, inspire and are inspired by amazing makers at local level through their branches and the wider Guild community, facilitating learning new skills and about the history of knitting and crochet.

The Knitting & Crochet Guild Northern Regional Day 2025

This year the Guild held their Regional Conference at The Watershed in Slaithwaite thus becoming part of the WOVEN25 programme. WOVEN provided a small pot of funding via Arts Council England to be able to offer bursaries to young people who may not otherwise be able to attend this inspiring event.

Over the jam-packed day, attendees could choose from 10 inspirational workshops, a tour of the Collection and talks by Emma from Woolyknit and Sarah at Hazeldene Flock. In between sessions they held a marketplace to tempt all those enthusiastic yarn creatives.

"Lots of people to talk to, varied events, plenty of space for people to sit and knit (including the balcony over the river which was lovely), and the market room with lots of irresistible bargains."

Part of the KCG Collection was also brought along to the Archive Day at Tolsen Museum, where they exhibited alongside other local and national textile archives, from small local museums such as  Skelmenthorpe Textile Heritage Centre, Kirklees Museums own textile archives, our Yorkshire neighbours the Society of Dyers and Colourists and Sunny bank Mills, and nationally The Westminster Archives Service.

The enthusiasm and fantastic story telling that brings to life the important garments they exhibit means that the Guild members are highlights at WOVEN events. In WOVEN23 they spoke at our Night on the Knit event at Huddersfield Art Gallery, and formed part of our Mission to Mend Roadshows.

Each WOVEN Festival has had the popular The Knitting and Crochet Guild Open Days as part of the event programme.

If you are interested in joining the KCG details can be found here.
