There were many great projects happening in Kirklees this June inspired by WOVEN.
One we loved was the art piece created 60 pupils from Newsome Junior Academy and Newsome Academy who worked together with staff and volunteers to show Newsome Mills in its former glory of the 1800s/1900s.
Children of all ages worked together to make the piece using chicken wire as a base and weaving recycled fabrics through the wire, creating a unique handmade piece of art depicting the mill in it’s hey day. A rainbow in the sky frames the mill to celebrate Pride Month in June.
Newsome Mills was a working woollen textile mill right up until 1983, after 156 years of near continuous operation.
The mill’s architectural merits meant it was listed as a Grade II historical building in 1978. Sadly in 2016 a fire destroyed most of the mill however the iconic clock-tower still stands.
Many families who live in Newsome today have a direct relationship to Newsome Mills and it remains an important part of the textile heritage of the Huddersfield area.
Take a look at look at some of the images of the pupils making the piece.
