University of Manchester: Activist Creatives – Online Discussion

WOVEN commissioned content logo

The Activist Creatives project brings together artists, activists and researchers in West Yorkshire, Manchester and Oslo investigating the potential of alternative, pro-environmental fashion activism.

As part of WOVEN 2025, the University of Manchester hosted an online discussion exploring how fashion activists – from social entrepreneurs and independent designer-makers, to community arts organisations and academic researchers – are working to rethink the fashion system from the ground up.

WOVEN’s Nat Walton joined speakers from Manchester Fashion MovementStitched Up, Thread Republic and The Design Studio raising awareness about the damaging effects of clothing consumption and waste on people and planet and inspiring communities to take action on sustainable fashion.

Academics from Oslo Metropolitan University, Manchester Metropolitan University, and University of Bradford  shared their research into the relationship between people, fashion, clothing, and fabric, and how this could act as a catalyst for change.

Watch the fascinating discussion below.
