Mandala Making at the Wilberlee School

Lots of colourful knitted mandalas on a table

As part of the Spectrum SHOP 100 project, local schoolchildren were introduced to the colourful art of God’s Eye mandala weaving—also known as stick weaving. With donated materials and plenty of creativity, each child explored their own unique approach to colour, texture, and pattern.

Working within specific colour palettes, some children chose bold, contrasting colours, while others explored subtle tonal variations or experimented with different textiles. No two mandalas were alike—each one a personal, expressive piece of art.

This vibrant session was made possible thanks to generous donations from local people along with support from WOEVN, and it was a true celebration of community, craft, and creativity. The classroom buzzed with excitement and pride as each creation took shape — a reminder of the joy and connection that hands-on making can bring.

Look out for them on display in Slaithwaite village centre during the WOVEN festival.
