WOVEN is excited to launch the Yorkshire Calico Dress, a new community embroidery project inspired by the success of the Red Dress at WOVEN 2025

The Yorkshire Calico Dress is part of the Calico Garment Initiative by Red Dress artist Kirstie Macleod.

The project invites groups across Kirklees to collaborate on a shared calico dress, using embroidery to tell personal and collective stories. Calico is an affordable fabric and easy to work with, making it accessible to people of all backgrounds and skill levels.

WOVEN is partnering with Ravensthorpe Community Centre, and the dress has now arrived in Kirklees. Several organisations are already involved, and we’re inviting more to join us. The finished dress will be showcased at WOVEN Festival 2027.

Our ambition is to host a Calico Dress in each district of West Yorkshire, so we are also looking for partner organisations in Bradford, Wakefield, Leeds and Calderdale to get involved. Please email emma@hatchprojects.org.uk for more information.

If your group would like to take part and tell your story through stitch please complete the Expression of Interest form by 1st December 2025. Groups must begin work on the project by March 2026 latest.

Let’s stitch something extraordinary together.
