Be Part of the Yorkshire Calico Dress

Following the incredible success of the Red Dress this year, WOVEN is thrilled to launch the Yorkshire Calico Dress, part of the global Calico Garment Initiative led by Red Dress artist Kirstie Macleod.

This inspiring project invites communities to create their own embroidered garment using calico – a versatile, affordable fabric that’s easy to work with. It’s a chance for people of all backgrounds and skill levels to come together and stitch stories that reflect their identity, heritage, and creativity.

WOVEN is partnering with Ravensthorpe Community Centre to bring the project to life in Kirklees, and we’ve just taken delivery of our calico dress. Several local groups are already on board — now we’re inviting organisations across the district to join us!

The completed dress will be showcased at WOVEN Festival 2027, celebrating the rich tapestry of community voices across Kirklees.

We’re also looking to expand the initiative across West Yorkshire, with the ambition to host a Calico Dress in Bradford, Wakefield, Leeds, and Calderdale. If you’re based in one of these areas and would like to get involved, we’d love to hear from you. Please email emma@hatchprojects.org.uk for more information.
