Introduction and Playing with Natural Dyes (Kirkburton)

Join the Growing Colour Together Kirkburton artists Nicola and Seiko for and introduction to working with natural dyes.

This exploratory session will introduce you to a number of both core and fun approaches to dying fabric with natural materials. This will include piece dyeing [solid colours], bundle dyeing, the effects of changing the Ph levels and exploring how different fabrics produce a range of results.

We will consider how we may take ideas beyond the dye pot into our homes and wardrobes and the ethical and sustainable benefits of natural dyeing. Furthermore, while we will experiment with a range of dyestuffs, we will also consider potential development of dyes grown in the local area or our own gardens.

Natural dyeing can be very straight forward, and it is easy to achieve quick, effective and creative results. This session is intended to show how this is possible without deep diving into wider, but more complex potential directions of mordanting etc. No experience is necessary.
