DESCRIPTION:Locker hooking is a rag rugging technique that originated in England in the early 1900s. It uses long strips of fabric\, mesh and a tool like a crochet hook with a needle end. People – you and I – have been rebranded as Consumers\, with a very clearly defined role in this system: Buy more stuff. \nBut what if we want to opt-out of this system? Elnaz is dedicated to sharing her textile skills and promoting the importance of embroidery as an art form for the future and for community wellbeing. Elnaz has taught embroidery throughout her community\, within primary\, secondary and higher education as well as community groups and organisations. \nIn 2020 Elnaz was commended for the teaching excellence award in embroidery via the Embroiderers Guild and became an Embroiderers Guild Scholar after the successful launch of her virtual embroidery school ‘Embroider Your Future’. \nHer practice explores ways of transforming traditional embroidery techniques through her choice of unusual materials; she is inspired by industrial\, upcycled materials and the ways in which she can embellish\, connect or transform these items through stitch to develop a surface or form. Her unique embroidery style has allowed her to work across fashion\, jewellery and installation contexts since graduating from Manchester School of Art in 2014.

DESCRIPTION:Rag Rugging is a technique traditionally used to turn rags into textural rags. \nIn this open ended session you’ll learn two versatile rag rug techniques that can be used to make a piece of wall art\, homewares\, a brooch or more. As rag rugging takes a long time to complete you may not finish your piece in the session (but if you opt to do a brooch you will do) but will go away with tools and skills to complete it. \nThere will be a wide range of fabric scraps\, recycled materials\, colourful rope\, buttons and other things to choose from to make your piece unique. \nThis event is part of the WOVEN community programme.
