DESCRIPTION:A WOVEN festival highlight in 2025 is The Red Dress\, a globally-travelled collaborative embroidery project at Oakwell Hall this summer. \nThe award winning project was initiated by British artist Kirstie Macleod in 2009 to help marginalised women tell their stories through stitching\, uniting people around the world without borders. The dress now features the work of more than 300 embroiderers from 51 countries and has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide\, and will now be on display in Kirklees. \nJoin a powerful\, accessible experience on Sunday 29th June with Jane Ensell – Audio Description Artist\, Editor\, and Disability Access Consultant. \nExplore The Red Dress and its surroundings through vivid\, immersive audio description. DESCRIPTION:Join Artist Kirstie Macleod for an introduction to The Red Dress project. \nKirstie has been an artist for over 20 years and has dedicated 16 of those to The Red Dress project. What started as a sketch in 2009 evolved into a global collaboration\, connecting thousands worldwide. Growing up across diverse cultures\, Kirstie’s early years were infused with colour\, language\, and contrasting experiences. Art became her way of understanding her journey\, leading her to a BA in Textile Design and an MA in Visual Language & Performance. \nEmbroidery soon captivated her with its rich history and potential for expression. A pivotal moment came in 2002 in southern India\, where she stitched alongside Karnatakan Lambani women\, sharing a profound\, wordless connection. The Red Dress began as an exploration of identity\, transforming into a symbol of unity and voice. Amidst global challenges\, its message of collaboration and compassion resonates stronger than ever\, inspiring hope for a more connected and empathetic world. \nFree but booking required. Inspired by the iconic The Red Dress Embroidery Project\, this immersive event brings together community groups\, expert stitchers\, and textile enthusiasts to explore the rich tapestry of global embroidery traditions. \nWith live showcases\, interactive stalls and storytelling in stitch – Watch master stitchers from diverse cultures demonstrate their traditional techniques and discover stunning fabrics and embroidery styles from around the world\, and explore projects that weave together history\, heritage\, and artistry. \n– 6 million + with textiles created and clothing tales told by local refugee groups for their Wear and Share project. \n– Local artist Iqra shares traditional hand-stitched tunics made with local communities of Pakistani heritage \n– Seiko will showcase the Japanese tradition of Sashiko stitching \n– The African Fabric Shop brings us a visual feast of pattern and print \n– Lace-making demonstrations by artist Francis Ayers \n– Local stitcher Sue Carter celebrates stitch traditions and heart-warming family heirlooms \n– Huddersfield Embroidery and Textiles Group will share the Greek myth inspired Archane a naturally dyed dress created as part of the Growing Colour Together project. There’ll be an abundance of Dorset buttons\, highlighting the traditional handmade craft that originated in Dorset in the 17th century. \nHands-On Workshops – Try your hand at embroidery techniques from different countries and take home your own stitched creation! \nIncluding: \n– The Textile Time Machine from The Campervan Collective.  Explore the past and future to create a fantastical time machine using textiles\, words and mark making. Bring a textile object or scrap that holds a personal memory for you and dive into a creative journey to explore collaboration\, memory and the concept of home.  You don’t need to have any skills for this workshop – you can knot\, wind\, wrap or stitch. If you don’t have a textile object to bring\, we will be providing lots of fabric to choose from. DESCRIPTION:A WOVEN festival highlight in 2025 is The Red Dress\, a globally-travelled collaborative embroidery project\, coming to Oakwell Hall this summer. \nThe award winning project was initiated by British artist Kirstie Macleod in 2009 to help marginalised women tell their stories through stitching\, uniting people around the world without borders. The dress now features the work of more than 300 embroiderers from 51 countries and has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide\, and will now be on display in Kirklees. \nThe Red Dress has been brought together over time creating a united voice of love\, equality and peace\, as well as showcasing an exquisite variety of embroidery skill\, traditions\, symbols\, motifs and imagery from around the world. \nDon’t miss the opportunity to experience the unique stitches and stories up close. \nBOOK YOUR GUARANTEED ENTRY TICKET HERE \nUPDATE ON TICKETS: Guaranteed tickets are now sold out but you can still turn up on the day and visit\, you might have to queue a little longer than normal but we think it’s worth the wait to experience the dress in all its stunning glory up close. \nPlease note Oakwell Hall opening times are: \n\nSaturday 1-4pm – please note Saturday 29th June the opening time is slightly later at 1pm \nSunday\,  12-4pm \nMonday  12-4pm \nTuesday  12-4pm \nWednesday 12-4pm \nFor Groups of over 10\, please contact Oakwell.hall@kirklees.gov.uk to book your visit.
