Get Involved - The Big Rainbow Knit

We need you!

Something exciting is happening at WOVEN and we need you!

In June 2021 we are going to be yarn bombing something really impressive – Huddersfield Train Station – specifically the six grand pillars at the front of the station building. We are also working towards yarn bombing other train stations and local communities across Kirklees to create a trail of spectacular woollen rainbow-coloured installations.

With so much to cover we have created a Yarny army!

Hundreds of people from across Kirklees, the country and the world – be they experienced wool crafters, complete beginners or somewhere in between – are now involved in making individual, coloured pieces at home for the giant yarn bomb that will combine to make the much larger installation. We have had thousands of squares submitted, with our final deadline for St. Georges Square on 31st March, BUT there are still things you can do after that date to make The Big Rainbow Knit one of the most epic Yarn Bomb installation ever, so do join in.

We aim to project our Rainbow Rays wide into the community, encouraging groups and schools to create their own Rainbow Ray Installation where they live and to yarn bomb stations running into Huddersfield, marking the way to the Big Rainbow Knit.

Here’s what you can do if you’d like to take part, as an activity group, school or individual of any age:

  • Create some squares for Rainbow Rays Yarn Bombings. You can send them to us by mid May and we will distribute to local communities and stations. If you’re on Facebook join the Big Rainbow Knitters Group
  • Be a Rainbow Rays group and create your own Yarn bomb in your community. This is great for craft groups, schools, WI’s, support groups wherever you are. This group is supported by local designer Sandra Nesbitt with ideas and patterns. If you’re on Facebook join the Big Knit Rainbow Rays Group
  • Get added value to your Rainbow Rays squares by taking part in the Kirkwood Hospice Big Rainbow Knit Fundraiser
  • Remember to sign up to the Big Rainbow Knit mailing list opposite so that we can contact you with information and further instructions as the project develops.
  • You can also download the patterns and instructions, read the FAQs and get knitting.
  • Have a look at our other video content for new techniques. We’ll let you know through the mailing list when new content is added, including instructions if you’re a complete beginner.

Rainbows represent positivity and joy, and we want the BIG RAINBOW KNIT to unite our communities at WOVEN in June 2021 to create series of positive and joyful installations that everyone can feel proud of.

This information will be shared with HATCH (WOVEN curators). It will only be used to get in touch with you about the Big Rainbow Knit and will not be passed to any other parties.
