SUMMARY:The Cultures of Climate Arts Trail
DESCRIPTION:Journey across The Cultures of Climate Art trail\, to Dewsbury and Huddersfield – to find Recycling En Masse – its heritage\, activism\, and future. \n‘Recycling En Masse’ is a collection of printed reproductions of paintings and photographs depicting citizens of Dewsbury\, with views of Textile Mills. \nThese images are part of the site-specific ‘Cultures of Climate Art Trail’\, between Huddersfield and Dewsbury\, exploring the role of art as an asset for social and environmental sustainability. \nVisitors are invited to consider the current climate crisis\, against the backdrop of the 19c and 20c production of Shoddy and Mungo – the earliest and largest example of recycled textile fabric. Instead of celebrating the industrial ingenuity\, or scale of recycling\, the artworks from the Kirklees Collections help shine a light on the social contexts of the industry. \nThe textile installation ‘Soar Away’ (2022) by New Zealand-based artist Deborah Rundle tells the story the activism of Ann Ellis\, and the Hillstone Fibre Arts exhibition using yarn from Huddersfield company Iinouiio Recycled Textiles are also part of the trail. \nAn online discussion between Dr Janine Sykes and artist Deborah Rundle is to take place during the Arts Trail /WOVEN Festival – stay tuned for more information. \nTHE TRAIL LOCATIONS: \n-Recycle En Masse Toast House Café\, University of Huddersfield Queen St South Annexe\, Huddersfield HD1 3DR 10am-3pm Mon-Thurs\, 10am-2:30pm Fri. \n-Soar Away Deborah Rundle\, Dewsbury Town Hall\, Wakefield Old Rd\, Dewsbury WF12 8DG\, 9am–5pm Mon-Fri \n–Hillstone Fibre Arts Exhibition the Arcade Pop-Up\, 25 Princess of Wales Precinct\, Dewsbury WF13 1NH 10am-2pm Wed–Fri \n

SUMMARY:Yarn Bombing at Roberttown Village
DESCRIPTION:Roberttown craft and chatter are a community group who have enjoyed working together to create this wonderful installation at Roberttown Village – described as a ‘close knit community’. \nLook out for a flock of sheep decorating railings\, a nod to the village’s heritage of sitting within the Heavy Woollen District. The sheep have been lovingly made from both yarn donated to our group and samples that have been repurposed. \nEach one is different in shape\, size\, colour and texture\, representing the differences between us all but that together they form a powerful flock. \nThere are also 12 bollard toppers to be found\, depicting various aspects of this colourful village and it’s community.

SUMMARY:Flower Bombing in the Village - Meltham style
DESCRIPTION:Come and see celebrate the spectacular flower bombing of our Village using all forms of yarn and fabric crafts! \nThe Meltham Textiles Group is planning a spectacular floral inspired textile installation for the WOVEN in Kirklees festival\, to be displayed across Meltham throughout June. We intend to decorate the whole village with handmade flowers using all fabric and yarn techniques. \nWe will be bringing the community together with a series of workshops to create the hundreds of flowers to realise our vision. This will result in beautiful floral displays that will be hung from lamp posts\, in shops and across our village. This is the second project we have undertaken as a village\, successfully creating the Meltham Community Quilt last year which will be on display during the event too. \nMeltham is a hidden gem\, nestled between Holmfirth and Slaithwaite. If you haven’t visited our lovely village before it is easy to find us\, just hop on the 324 bus from Huddersfield. \nThis event is part of the WOVEN community programme.

SUMMARY:Cutting Waste\, Creating Wonky - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Cutting Waste\, Creating Wonky explores the beauty of imperfection in fashion by presenting garments that challenge conventional design and pattern-cutting techniques. Reimagining traditional methods\, the exhibition emphasizes fabric-efficient clothing\, turning irregularities into positive design features to reduce fashion waste. \nBy altering grainlines and embracing unconventional pattern cuts\, Cutting Waste\, Creating Wonky pushes the boundaries of garment construction\, blending experimental design with wearability. The exhibition showcases how innovative approaches can transform our understanding of fashion and sustainability. \nDr. Claire Evans\, Senior Lecturer in Fashion at the University of Huddersfield\, began her career in the 1990s designing garments in Moldgreen\, Huddersfield. This exhibition traces her journey from traditional fashion to radical\, waste-conscious design. Featuring pieces from her original fashion line alongside jersey cotton skirts that explore challenging fabric-efficient approaches\, Cutting Waste\, Creating Wonky celebrates creative resistance and responsible fashion innovation. \nThe exhibitions runs from Saturday 1st June to Saturday 28th June at the Tolson Museum. \nOpening times are: \nMonday 11-3\nTuesday 11-5\nWednesday 11-5\nThursday 11-5\nFriday CLOSED\nSaturday & Sunday 12-5 \nThis event is part of the WOVEN community programme. \nFree to attend. No booking required. \nJoin the Cutting Waste\, Creating Wonky talk with Dr. Claire Evans on 11 June.
