SUMMARY:A Celebration of Banners
DESCRIPTION:At New North Road Baptist we have a number of banners designed and made by a long-standing member\, Barbara Trigg. Barbara has used her creative talents to design banners using a variety of techniques including appliqué and embroidery. The banners are in regular use in our church and are a celebration of our faith and provide colour and brightness to our Sanctuary. \nThe banners will be on display in our hall and our Sanctuary\, and we hope they provide a display of the versatility that textiles provide. We will also be showing our new banner designed to celebrate our 50th year in the New North Parade building. \nWe look forward to providing a very warm welcome to all who have attended New North Road Baptist in the past\, attend other groups in our building and those who will be stepping into our building for the first time. \nThis event is part of the WOVEN community programme. If you have any questions please contact New North Road Baptist directly.

SUMMARY:Kirklees Quilts for Care Leavers Open Day
DESCRIPTION:The Q4CLs project provides handmade quilt ‘hugs’ for young people aged between 18 and 24 who are living independently after their time in care of the Local Authority has come to an end. \nThe quilts have been made to promote wellbeing and show these young people they are not alone and that someone cares. \nThe makers of these quilts get a great deal of satisfaction as they are doing something they love at the same time as showing support and understanding for these young people as they begin a new stage in their lives. \nWe see these quilts as lovingly handmade ‘HUGS’. \nThis event is part of the WOVEN community programme. If you have any questions please contact Meltham Quilters directly.

SUMMARY:Sew Inclusive: male & non-binary textile artists in conversation
DESCRIPTION:“When I started to use embroidery – some women had a problem with this\, they felt that I was working in a territory that was not supposed to be mine.” – Michael Raedecker \nHear textile artists Richard McVetis\, David Morrish and Andi Walker discussing their experiences and artistic practices\, in a panel chaired by fellow textile artist Nicola Perren. \nRichard McVetis studied at Manchester School of Art & the Royal College of Art\, where he now teaches. His practice is deeply rooted in process\, and intrinsic to this is hand embroidery: a record of time and presence\, an embodiment of thought and patience. Recent works examine the connection to material and place through personal histories and address questions of class and race. \nDavid Morrish is the Wilcom Digital Embroiderer of the Year (2019 & 2021) and has collaborated with leading artists\, designers and brands across the globe. His work crosses boundaries & disciplines and tackles a wide range of subject matters. Amongst other things\, he is currently working on a collaborative quilt for the Terrence Higgins Trust\, which will be unveiled at this year’s Festival of Quilts\, and he was recently featured on BBC1’s “Make it at Market”\, showcasing digital embroidery to over 2 million viewers. \nA graduate of the Royal College of Art\, Andi Walker’s work frequently challenges and subverts societal norms around gender. Their work often includes performative methods of applying dye to cloth\, and is frequently positioned within the context of dance\, exploring the relationship between dancer & garment. They have recently worked with the Yorkshire Sculpture Park\, creating the “Stitched Stories” quilt\, which is on display at YSP until 9th July. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE

SUMMARY:Nicola Perren & Dionne Swift in conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join two fascinating local textile artists\, Dionne Swift and Nicola Perren\, to hear about their processes and inspirations for their work\, and their experiences of working on collaborative quilts with people within Kirklees and beyond. \nDionne has been creating\, exhibiting and teaching for over 30 years and specialises in free machine embroidery\, with a commitment to drawing\, observing and reacting to her environment. For Dionne\, making is a meditation but her pieces are still imbued with vitality and energy. \nA designer and teacher\, Nicola’s practice is centred around creativity\, play and exploration. Quilts hold a particular fascination for Nicola\, specifically Whole Cloth quilts which can be found around the world\, and she is interested in quilts that are both functional and not. She is working with local communities as an artist on our Growing Colour Together project and is exploring using more natural dyes in her own work. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE \nBSL interpretation will be available at this event.

SUMMARY:Growing Colour Together Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our WOVEN 2023 Growing Colour Together Symposium to celebrate the work our artists and communities have created together. This year WOVEN has commissioned seven artists to work with three areas in Kirklees. The artists have worked in partnership with the community planting dye gardens and using what’s grown to make natural dyes for textiles! Hear what they have been up to during this artist and community discussion panel. \nWOVEN has two Post Graduate Research students exploring the Growing Colour Together project. We will be joined by MA researchers Hannah Schofield-Lee and Kayleigh Davis for a presentation on their research and findings so far. \nDebbie Bamford\, of the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) \, will talk about natural dyes used in the textile industry. Natural dyes have been used to colour textiles for over 6000 years. Superseded by synthetic dyes from the late 19th century\, concerns about the environment and pollution form the dye industry have turned thoughts back to the natural world. This talk is a travel through time with commercial use of natural dyes. \nWe will also be joined by two other special guest speakers; Claire Wellesley-Smith\, author of Resilient Stitch and Slow Stitch\, and Bella Gonshorovitz\, author of Grow\, Cook\, Dye and Wear. \nThere will be tours of the Barbara Hepworth building including print and dye facilities with textile samples and techniques to explore throughout the day. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE \nBSL interpretation will be available at this event.

SUMMARY:Shakespeare and the Fur Trade: Ermines and Whiteness in The Winter's Tale
DESCRIPTION:Fur was an important marker of status in early modern England. \nThis talk\, by Dr Todd Andrew Borlick\, investigates the role of fur as a performing object on the Shakespearean stage\, revealing the problematic alliance between the theatre industry and the global fur trade. \nIt argues that Shakespeare troubles this alliance by humanising animals and bestialising humans\, while exposing furs as signifiers of racialised affect. Specifically\, it looks at the queen Hermione in The Winter’s Tale as a personified ermine\, a creature that embodies monarchical power\, female sexual purity\, and hyper-whiteness. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Todd Andrew Borlik ia a Reader in Renaissance Literature\, Director of International for Arts & Humanities\, Admission Tutor for English Literature\, Creative Writing\, and Screen Writing\, and Membership Secretary for ASLE-UKI\n\nFind out more in his most recent book – Shakespeare Beyond the Green World\n\nBOOK YOUR PLACE

SUMMARY:Intro to Natural Dyeing
DESCRIPTION:Explore a range of colours using vegetable and plant dyes such as turmeric\, madder\, onion skins and logwood on this one day natural dyeing workshop. \nDuring the session\, you will learn about using dyes to dye cottons\, silk & wool and will create your own technical colour chart of small fabric samples (swatches) using the different dyes. \nTutor Kirstie Williams is a local textile artist and printmaker who works with various print techniques such as screen printing\, cyanotypes\, linocut and textile dyeing and printing. \nThis is ideal for complete beginners in fabric dyeing. Those who already have a creative practice\, especially one focused around working with textiles\, may benefit from learning about the natural dyeing process. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE \nThis event is part of the WOVEN community programme.
