SUMMARY:Shakespeare and the Fur Trade: Ermines and Whiteness in The Winter's Tale
DESCRIPTION:Fur was an important marker of status in early modern England. \nThis talk\, by Dr Todd Andrew Borlick\, investigates the role of fur as a performing object on the Shakespearean stage\, revealing the problematic alliance between the theatre industry and the global fur trade. \nIt argues that Shakespeare troubles this alliance by humanising animals and bestialising humans\, while exposing furs as signifiers of racialised affect. Specifically\, it looks at the queen Hermione in The Winter’s Tale as a personified ermine\, a creature that embodies monarchical power\, female sexual purity\, and hyper-whiteness. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Todd Andrew Borlik ia a Reader in Renaissance Literature\, Director of International for Arts & Humanities\, Admission Tutor for English Literature\, Creative Writing\, and Screen Writing\, and Membership Secretary for ASLE-UKI\n\nFind out more in his most recent book – Shakespeare Beyond the Green World\n\nBOOK YOUR PLACE

SUMMARY:Foraging Walk for Natural Dyes
DESCRIPTION:Kayleigh Davis is a natural dye textile artist and is passionate about responsible foraging practices and sharing insight into which plants can be foraged locally for natural dyes\, making this accessible to those wishing to explore natural dyes in their local area. \nWe will meet at the grassy area with a gate next to St Patrick’s Catholic Primary Academy on George Avenue. Good walking shoes are recommended as we may wander off the beaten track. \nAs part of this guided walk\, you can expect an educational journey\, stopping along the way to learn\, share and forage. \nThe walk is expected to take roughly 45 minutes in total. There will be a short demonstration at the end of the session and the walk itself will be a circular so that we will end up where we started. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE

SUMMARY:Study Day: Spotlight on the Textile Fabrics of India Archive
DESCRIPTION:In 1866 the Secretary of State for India presented a set of 18 volumes containing 700 textile samples from different parts of India to Huddersfield Mechanics’ Institute. The samples were intended to show English manufacturers state-of-the-art styles\, colours and techniques at a moment when textile production in England was booming. \nToday\, these volumes can be found at Heritage Quay\, the Archive Service of the University of Huddersfield\, and tell stories of empire\, trade and the power and politics of design. Join archive staff\, Independent curator Uthra Rajgopal\, and Avalon Fotheringham\, Curator of South Asian Textiles at the V&A\, for a full day of exploring this remarkable collection. \nThe morning will feature an introductory talk examining the collection in its context\, and the afternoon a study session with a discussion-based exploration of the pieces. \nThis event will be in two parts\, morning a hybrid talk\, both online and at Huddersfield Art Gallery. Afternoon at Huddersfield Art Gallery in person only. \nThis is a free event\, but donations are very welcome. \nBOOKING LINKS:\nIN-PERSON talk: 10:30am-12pm\, this is a day long event\, so please bring lunch with you.\n\nONLINE talk: 10:30am-12pm\n\nIN-PERSON hands-on study session:  1-3pm

SUMMARY:Hudfam: The Huddersfield Origins of the Fair Trade and Sustainability Movement
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a public talk by Professor Bertrand Taithe on the history of Hudfam and its remarkable founder Elisabeth Wilson. \nThis is the story of how Huddersfield came to have one of the first charity shops in the country selling second-hand clothes and fair-trade products. Originally called the Huddersfield Famine Relief Committee\, Hudfam was founded in 1943 to campaign for relief during the Indian and Greek famines in the Second World War. In the 1960s it organised a sale of items made by Chinese refugees in Hong Kong. This was the start of Hudfam’s pioneering sale of fairly-traded handicrafts made in development projects around the world– an idea which became the bedrock of Oxfam’s global development and sustainability goals. \nElisabeth Wilson was a ground-breaking woman: entrepreneur\, fundraiser\, development campaigner\, Quaker\, Buddhist and peace activist. Her fascinating story will be told through her memoirs\, photographs and fair-trade objects. \nThis is a free event\, but donations are very welcome. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE \nBSL interpretation will be available at this event.

Draft out a design and complete a small sample piece to take away. Please bring along old woollen jumpers (pre shrunk) \, tweeds\, old t-shirts to transform into something gorgeous! \nThis is a day long event\, so please bring lunch with you. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE

SUMMARY:Botanical: a Contemporary Approach to Natural Dyeing
DESCRIPTION:Please come and join us as we celebrate the Growing Colour Together project and the communities of the Kirkburton Parish. \nWith a contemporary approach to natural dyed textiles\, you can observe the large-scale installation Modified made by artists Seiko Kinoshita & Nicola Perren\, engage with the design collection with contributions from local makers\, listen to music and go on a walk through the grounds to the newly created church community garden. \nThis is a creative response to a long-term call to turn areas of Kirklees into Natural Colour Gardens. Over the previous months\, workshops have worked with members of the Kirkburton community to learn about such an approach to gardening\, how to dye textiles with natural materials and how we might utilise mending of textiles to develop more sustainable practices when it comes to our wardrobes and soft furnishings. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE
