SUMMARY:Memorial Gestures I - Laura Fisher
DESCRIPTION:Holocaust Centre North is showcasing an exhibition of work by their first artists-in-residence. \nThrough the Memorial Gestures Residency Programme\, three artists have been invited to explore Holocaust Centre North’s archive. This contains the stories of 100+ Jewish refugees and Holocaust survivors who made new lives in the North of England. \nArtist Laura Fisher has explored the important role textiles played in some families’ lives. Working with Elinor Sykes from the University of Huddersfield\, Laura has created knitted blankets for visitors to look at\, touch and wrap around themselves. \n“The designs of these blankets are based on artefacts that are part of the collection at Holocaust Centre North. Conveying messages of warmth\, hope\, and solidarity\, and facilitated by organisations such as the Red Cross\, these letters and telegrams were often the only means of communication allowed between concentration camp prisoners and their loved ones in the outside world.” \nOpen 10am – 5pm\, Monday – Thursday only.

SUMMARY:Knitted Village
DESCRIPTION:Members of Flockton WI have worked together to make a large representation of the village in yarn. Needles and hooks were put into action back in 2019 but then paused during the pandemic so the majority of the work has been done since January 2023. The charm of the work comes from the fact that the buildings and features have all been designed from photographs by the makers themselves and are\, therefore\, very individual in style. \nThe hanging\, approximately 2.5 metres by 1.25 metres\, will be on display outside the church 24/7 for the duration of the festival. \nTwo colour garden planters and crochet flowers will enhance the display which will be visible from the main road.

SUMMARY:Hill Tree Park Yarn Bomb
DESCRIPTION:Hill Tree Park is a park home community of 200 people over 50 in Crosland Moor\, Huddersfield \nWe have a weekly knit and natter group which we hold in the local golf club (saving fuel bills as well as providing social contact). We feel we epitomise sustainability as we have learned how to keep going through COVID\, through current economic hardship and through knitting items for a local charity\, Santa’s Seniors\, which provides Christmas gifts for older people who are isolated or have no family. \nWe have a small post box on site which we are going to top and we will be yarn bombing the trees along the road side with bunting\, so our display is quite small on the boundary of the park and is visible from the road to passers-by.

SUMMARY:Quilted: Community\, Creativity and Care - Huddersfield
DESCRIPTION:Quilted celebrates the powerful art of quiltmaking. Stitching a quilt can be an act of protest\, a gesture of care\, or an opportunity to connect with other people. Quilts can be personal and heartfelt\, made with a particular individual in mind. Quiltmaking can also be a collective activity: people can work together to explore and share social\, political and creative ideas. \nQuilted represents the work of many hands and reveals multiple stories. The exhibition brings together three distinct groups of quilts to provide a rich conversation about quiltmaking today. \nThe Threads of Survival quilts were produced across the UK by over 160 people during the Covid-19 pandemic. Many of these quilts were made in challenging times and in difficult circumstances. Threads of Survival is an ongoing project and is open to all. Several communities have made new quilts in response to the exhibition as it has toured. The exhibition here\, for example\, features new quilts made by communities in Leeds and Rotherham.  \nThe exhibition also features quilts made by local communities working across Kirklees. These quilts reveal the remarkable creativity and commitment of groups and collectives dedicated to caring for others\, combating isolation and encouraging community action. \nQuiltmaking remains an important medium for artists today. Quilted features a range of quilts made by individual textile artists and makers based in and around Kirklees. These quilts reveal a host of innovative methods\, ideas and narratives. \nThere are lots of ways to explore your creativity with textiles. At Huddersfield Art Gallery: Unit 7\, there is a full programme of talks\, presentations and workshops designed to encourage people to meet\, stitch and learn together.  \nThis event listing is for Huddersfield Art Gallery:Uit 7. Opening hours: Wednesday to Saturday\, 11am – 4pm \nPlease check the Bagshaw Museum listing for opening times and location details.

\nThis event listing is for Bagshaw Museum. Opening hours: Tuesday\, Wednesday\, Thursday 1100-1700\, Saturday and Sunday 1200-1700 \nPlease check the Huddersfield Art Gallery listing for opening times and location details. \n

SUMMARY:Hudfam: The Huddersfield Origins of the Fair Trade and Sustainability Movement
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a public talk by Professor Bertrand Taithe on the history of Hudfam and its remarkable founder Elisabeth Wilson. \nThis is the story of how Huddersfield came to have one of the first charity shops in the country selling second-hand clothes and fair-trade products. Originally called the Huddersfield Famine Relief Committee\, Hudfam was founded in 1943 to campaign for relief during the Indian and Greek famines in the Second World War. In the 1960s it organised a sale of items made by Chinese refugees in Hong Kong. This was the start of Hudfam’s pioneering sale of fairly-traded handicrafts made in development projects around the world– an idea which became the bedrock of Oxfam’s global development and sustainability goals. \nElisabeth Wilson was a ground-breaking woman: entrepreneur\, fundraiser\, development campaigner\, Quaker\, Buddhist and peace activist. Her fascinating story will be told through her memoirs\, photographs and fair-trade objects. \nThis is a free event\, but donations are very welcome. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE \nBSL interpretation will be available at this event.

SUMMARY:Study Day: Spotlight on the Textile Fabrics of India Archive
DESCRIPTION:In 1866 the Secretary of State for India presented a set of 18 volumes containing 700 textile samples from different parts of India to Huddersfield Mechanics’ Institute. The samples were intended to show English manufacturers state-of-the-art styles\, colours and techniques at a moment when textile production in England was booming. \nToday\, these volumes can be found at Heritage Quay\, the Archive Service of the University of Huddersfield\, and tell stories of empire\, trade and the power and politics of design. Join archive staff\, Independent curator Uthra Rajgopal\, and Avalon Fotheringham\, Curator of South Asian Textiles at the V&A\, for a full day of exploring this remarkable collection. \nThe morning will feature an introductory talk examining the collection in its context\, and the afternoon a study session with a discussion-based exploration of the pieces. \nThis event will be in two parts\, morning a hybrid talk\, both online and at Huddersfield Art Gallery. There will be 2 sessions to choose from – morning or afternoon. \nParticipants will be encouraged to bring onion skins\, avocado shells or pomegranate skins along with cuttings\, leaves and flowers from their gardens. We will combine the collected items to dye fabrics or small fabric items that people might bring in. \nAlso on offer will be bundle dyeing\, solar dyeing and plant hammering if time allows\, to introduce a few ways to create colour out of materials that can be found close to home. We will discuss ways to mordant and fix colour on the fabrics\, and how natural dye colours evolve and soften over time. \nSuitable for ages 12 and above\, under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. \nThis event is part of the WOVEN community programme. SUMMARY:Every Child Challenge - Home Education Session
DESCRIPTION:In this open-ended session you can learn a whole host of repairing techniques\, including patching\, various styles of decorative darning\, adding buttons as well as creative embroidery techniques that can be incorporated into your mending. This will include different embroidery stitches\, sashiko techniques\, boro\, kantha and more! \nYou’ll be able to try out different materials and mending equipment\, including historic darning tools. These techniques have fascinating cultural histories and over the years have been used to not only mend clothes\, but as a social activity. We encourage parents and children to work together to be creative together\, learn together and from each other. If you have your own mending techniques we encourage you to share them with us. \nThis workshop occurs in a gallery setting and can be a busy bustling environment! It’s likely that everyone will be working on their own unique piece of work and will be a creative process rather than a step by step technique. \nThis is a free event\, but donations are very welcome. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE for Wed 28 June\, 11.30-1 \nBOOK YOUR PLACE for Thurs 6 July\, 1.30-3.30
