The tour will be run by employees working in the mill and there will be opportunities to ask questions about the processes seen. \nThis will be followed by a tour of the mending department\, where you will get an opportunity to have a go at mending the cloth yourself. This is still done the traditional way\, by hand with a needle and yarn. SUMMARY:Weaving a Seabed
DESCRIPTION:hcmf// has invited multidisciplinary artist Natalie Sharp to host a weekend long\, drop-in event at MakerWorld. \nUsing second-hand and found fabrics and materials only\, Natalie will guide children and their families in creating a giant woven sea blanket as part of an imagined seabed\, complete with a watery soundtrack. A fully immersive\, underwater experience\, right in the centre of Huddersfield! \nOver the course of two days\, participants can drop by and join in with designing part of the sea blanket as well as learning some basic sound editing skills to help create a soundscape to provide the perfect backdrop to the newly created marine environment. \nOpen to children of any age and their accompanying grownups. All materials are provided\, but fabric donations are very welcome. Drop in anytime\, no booking required. \nNatalie Sharp is a disabled artist at the forefront of a movement the Quietus has dubbed New Weird Britain\, Natalie Sharp’s music explores non-conventional settings\, participatory performance and choreographed staging. Anti-framework and anti-expectation\, her work encompasses themes of gender\, sexuality\, pain and the body\, involving audiences in worlds they’ve never before experienced. Self-taught and uncompromisingly DIY\, Sharp’s work constantly integrates performer and listener\, removing the idea of consumption and replacing it with collaboration. Her talents as a musician\, costume designer and make-up artist come together in her performance alias Lone Taxidermist\, a surrealist alter ego she has used in collaborations with Gazelle Twin\, and taken on tour with artists such as Jenny Hval.

DESCRIPTION:A 2-part workshop to create a hand-built ceramic pot and macrame plant hanger. \nIn Week 1 (3rd June) we will be creating the pot by pinching\, forming and adding texture and a choice of coloured and textured clays. Choose one and option to add a glaze colour surface. Pots will be fired ready for Week 2 \nIn Week 2 (10th June) join talented textile artist Kim Searle to make macramé plant hangers from a variety of cords and recycled t-shirts. It’s the perfect craft for anyone whose window ledges are overflowing with plants! You’ll learn all the macramé knots you’ll need to make a variety of different designs and you should leave with one finished piece and a few instruction sheets to make more at home. So far\, the documentary has been a word-of-mouth success\, playing to packed houses and winning the Audience Award at the Brighton Cinecity Film Festival. \nAllan Brown is a textile artist and father of four. When his wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer\, his foraging\, spinning and weaving took on new meaning and provided solace. Across the presentation we will think about how in everyday life\, through our communities and through health and social care interventions\, gardens can be supportive of societal health and each life journey. \nWe will include practical ideas so that everyone can be more connected to nature through gardens for their own health benefit. We have 3 gardens in Birmingham\, London and Reading that support people directly in programmes of social and therapeutic horticulture. Additionally\, we have an information service that seeks to inspire and provide the knowledge so everyone can benefit from gardens and gardening alongside a training and education programme supporting other organisations and practitioners to develop the skills for practice. Each year we see first hand the transformational value that garden can have for people’s health and wellbeing.

SUMMARY:Growing Colour Together: CPD for teachers - setting up your colour garden
DESCRIPTION:In this CPD session for teachers\, taking place over Zoom\, natural dye expert Jane Howroyd will advise you on how to set up a colour garden at your school and use its harvest for curriculum-linked workshops. \nThis session is open to all teachers interested in starting their own colour garden at their school\, not just those already part of the Growing Colour Together seed funding programme. \nThe session will include: \n\nexploration of dye plant options\ndifferent dyeing methods\nclassroom activity and workshop ideas\ncurriculum links\na Q&A section for further advice from Jane.\n\nThe session will take place on Zoom: a link will be sent to all participants on the run up to the event. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE \nJane Howroyd is a textile artist and creative workshop facilitator\, with over 20 years experience of delivering creative\, historical\, textile\, craft and food sessions to a variety of audiences. \nShe has worked with natural dyes for over 20 years\, originally looking at the historical uses of dyes\, then at a range of natural dyeing/printing methods. She is one of Growing Colour Together’s local artists in residence in Dewsbury.
