SUMMARY:Memorial Gestures I - Laura Fisher
DESCRIPTION:Holocaust Centre North is showcasing an exhibition of work by their first artists-in-residence. \nThrough the Memorial Gestures Residency Programme\, three artists have been invited to explore Holocaust Centre North’s archive. This contains the stories of 100+ Jewish refugees and Holocaust survivors who made new lives in the North of England. \nArtist Laura Fisher has explored the important role textiles played in some families’ lives. Working with Elinor Sykes from the University of Huddersfield\, Laura has created knitted blankets for visitors to look at\, touch and wrap around themselves. \n“The designs of these blankets are based on artefacts that are part of the collection at Holocaust Centre North. Conveying messages of warmth\, hope\, and solidarity\, and facilitated by organisations such as the Red Cross\, these letters and telegrams were often the only means of communication allowed between concentration camp prisoners and their loved ones in the outside world.” \nOpen 10am – 5pm\, Monday – Thursday only.

SUMMARY:Knitted Village
DESCRIPTION:Members of Flockton WI have worked together to make a large representation of the village in yarn. Needles and hooks were put into action back in 2019 but then paused during the pandemic so the majority of the work has been done since January 2023. The charm of the work comes from the fact that the buildings and features have all been designed from photographs by the makers themselves and are\, therefore\, very individual in style. \nThe hanging\, approximately 2.5 metres by 1.25 metres\, will be on display outside the church 24/7 for the duration of the festival. \nTwo colour garden planters and crochet flowers will enhance the display which will be visible from the main road.

SUMMARY:Hill Tree Park Yarn Bomb
DESCRIPTION:Hill Tree Park is a park home community of 200 people over 50 in Crosland Moor\, Huddersfield \nWe have a weekly knit and natter group which we hold in the local golf club (saving fuel bills as well as providing social contact). We feel we epitomise sustainability as we have learned how to keep going through COVID\, through current economic hardship and through knitting items for a local charity\, Santa’s Seniors\, which provides Christmas gifts for older people who are isolated or have no family. \nWe have a small post box on site which we are going to top and we will be yarn bombing the trees along the road side with bunting\, so our display is quite small on the boundary of the park and is visible from the road to passers-by.

SUMMARY:Quilted: Community\, Creativity and Care - Huddersfield
DESCRIPTION:Quilted celebrates the powerful art of quiltmaking. Stitching a quilt can be an act of protest\, a gesture of care\, or an opportunity to connect with other people. Quilts can be personal and heartfelt\, made with a particular individual in mind. Quiltmaking can also be a collective activity: people can work together to explore and share social\, political and creative ideas. \nQuilted represents the work of many hands and reveals multiple stories. The exhibition brings together three distinct groups of quilts to provide a rich conversation about quiltmaking today. \nThe Threads of Survival quilts were produced across the UK by over 160 people during the Covid-19 pandemic. Many of these quilts were made in challenging times and in difficult circumstances. Threads of Survival is an ongoing project and is open to all. Several communities have made new quilts in response to the exhibition as it has toured. The exhibition here\, for example\, features new quilts made by communities in Leeds and Rotherham.  \nThe exhibition also features quilts made by local communities working across Kirklees. These quilts reveal the remarkable creativity and commitment of groups and collectives dedicated to caring for others\, combating isolation and encouraging community action. \nQuiltmaking remains an important medium for artists today. Quilted features a range of quilts made by individual textile artists and makers based in and around Kirklees. These quilts reveal a host of innovative methods\, ideas and narratives. \nThere are lots of ways to explore your creativity with textiles. At Huddersfield Art Gallery: Unit 7\, there is a full programme of talks\, presentations and workshops designed to encourage people to meet\, stitch and learn together.  \nThis event listing is for Huddersfield Art Gallery:Uit 7. Opening hours: Wednesday to Saturday\, 11am – 4pm \nPlease check the Bagshaw Museum listing for opening times and location details.

\nThis event listing is for Bagshaw Museum. Opening hours: Tuesday\, Wednesday\, Thursday 1100-1700\, Saturday and Sunday 1200-1700 \nPlease check the Huddersfield Art Gallery listing for opening times and location details. \n

SUMMARY:Foraging Walk for Natural Dyes
DESCRIPTION:Kayleigh Davis is a natural dye textile artist and is passionate about responsible foraging practices and sharing insight into which plants can be foraged locally for natural dyes\, making this accessible to those wishing to explore natural dyes in their local area. \nWe will meet at the grassy area with a gate next to St Patrick’s Catholic Primary Academy on George Avenue. Good walking shoes are recommended as we may wander off the beaten track. \nAs part of this guided walk\, you can expect an educational journey\, stopping along the way to learn\, share and forage. \nThe walk is expected to take roughly 45 minutes in total. There will be a short demonstration at the end of the session and the walk itself will be a circular so that we will end up where we started. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE

SUMMARY:Shakespeare and the Fur Trade: Ermines and Whiteness in The Winter's Tale
DESCRIPTION:Fur was an important marker of status in early modern England. \nThis talk\, by Dr Todd Andrew Borlick\, investigates the role of fur as a performing object on the Shakespearean stage\, revealing the problematic alliance between the theatre industry and the global fur trade. \nIt argues that Shakespeare troubles this alliance by humanising animals and bestialising humans\, while exposing furs as signifiers of racialised affect. Specifically\, it looks at the queen Hermione in The Winter’s Tale as a personified ermine\, a creature that embodies monarchical power\, female sexual purity\, and hyper-whiteness. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Todd Andrew Borlik ia a Reader in Renaissance Literature\, Director of International for Arts & Humanities\, Admission Tutor for English Literature\, Creative Writing\, and Screen Writing\, and Membership Secretary for ASLE-UKI\n\nFind out more in his most recent book – Shakespeare Beyond the Green World\n\nBOOK YOUR PLACE

SUMMARY:Growing Colour Together Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our WOVEN 2023 Growing Colour Together Symposium to celebrate the work our artists and communities have created together. This year WOVEN has commissioned seven artists to work with three areas in Kirklees. The artists have worked in partnership with the community planting dye gardens and using what’s grown to make natural dyes for textiles! Hear what they have been up to during this artist and community discussion panel. \nWOVEN has two Post Graduate Research students exploring the Growing Colour Together project. We will be joined by MA researchers Hannah Schofield-Lee and Kayleigh Davis for a presentation on their research and findings so far. \nDebbie Bamford\, of the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) \, will talk about natural dyes used in the textile industry. Natural dyes have been used to colour textiles for over 6000 years. Superseded by synthetic dyes from the late 19th century\, concerns about the environment and pollution form the dye industry have turned thoughts back to the natural world. This talk is a travel through time with commercial use of natural dyes. \nWe will also be joined by two other special guest speakers; Claire Wellesley-Smith\, author of Resilient Stitch and Slow Stitch\, and Bella Gonshorovitz\, author of Grow\, Cook\, Dye and Wear. \nThere will be tours of the Barbara Hepworth building including print and dye facilities with textile samples and techniques to explore throughout the day. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE \nBSL interpretation will be available at this event.
