SUMMARY:Introduction and Playing with Natural Dyes (Kirkburton)
DESCRIPTION:Join the Growing Colour Together Kirkburton artists Nicola and Seiko for and introduction to working with natural dyes. \nThis exploratory session will introduce you to a number of both core and fun approaches to dying fabric with natural materials. This will include piece dyeing [solid colours]\, bundle dyeing\, the effects of changing the Ph levels and exploring how different fabrics produce a range of results. \nWe will consider how we may take ideas beyond the dye pot into our homes and wardrobes and the ethical and sustainable benefits of natural dyeing. Furthermore\, while we will experiment with a range of dyestuffs\, we will also consider potential development of dyes grown in the local area or our own gardens. \nNatural dyeing can be very straight forward\, and it is easy to achieve quick\, effective and creative results. This session is intended to show how this is possible without deep diving into wider\, but more complex potential directions of mordanting etc. No experience is necessary. \nPlease note\, this session will not go into detail about scouring and mordants – if you are interested\, this information will be included in the Beyond the Basics of Natural Dyeing session\, feel free to sign up for both or just the one. \nBook Your Place

SUMMARY:Gardening for Health and Wellbeing - Thrive
DESCRIPTION:Join us online for a Growing Colour Together talk from gardening charity Thrive. \nThis online session by Thrive will explore the way in which gardens and gardening can be accessed and used for health and wellbeing\, including the evidence behind this. And our ambition is to create a district-wide\, natural-dye\, colour garden! We want to give everyone the opportunity to ‘have a grow\,’ use what’s grown to make natural dyes\, and learn about the environmental implications of chemical dyes and what we buy. It’s an evolving project and we want people to join in with the areas that interest you to grow\, make\, create and debate\, so this event is part of a series of talks\, events and workshops to help you get started with your colour garden.

SUMMARY:Community Growing Colour Together Project (Dewsbury)
DESCRIPTION:Growing Colour Together is more than a project\, it’s a MOVEMENT! And our ambition is to create a district-wide\, natural dye colour garden! Working in partnership across the district we want to give everyone the opportunity to ‘have a grow\,’ use what’s grown to make natural dyes\, and learn about the environmental implications of chemical dyes and what we buy. \nWOVEN in Kirklees has been supported by funding from Arts Council England and Kirklees Council to support the development of work in three areas of Kirklees. Each area will work with artists in collaboration to develop knowledge and understanding of art and nature\, with a focus on natural dyes. \nYour artists will put the community central to the project and work with you to develop an outcome for the WOVEN 2023 festival. Together you will explore themes of nature\, textiles\, climate change and wellbeing. \nThese sessions are suitable for adults with a particular focus on inviting women and girls in the community to take part and explore the wellbeing benefits of working with natural dyes\, the land and materials. If you have children with you\, they must be over the age of 5 and be accompanied by an adult at all times. \nCome along and join your artists for these creative natural dye sessions. Taking place in Dewsbury on Wednesdays at Crow Nest Adventure Play Area in Crow Nest Park between now and the WOVEN festival\, find out about the project\, share your ideas and learn how to get involved. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE

SUMMARY:Gardening for Health and Wellbeing - Thrive
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Growing Colour Together project the WOVEN team have put together a series of talks\, events and workshops to help you get started with your colour garden. \nThis online session by Thrive will explore the way gardens and gardening can be accessed and used for health and wellbeing\, including the evidence behind this. The session will include how horticultural therapy links with the use of natural dye plants and some of the aims of our Growing Colour Together project. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE \nAbout Thrive\nThrive is a charity that supports people with ill health and disability to use gardening for health and wellbeing. We have 3 gardens in Birmingham\, London and Reading that support people directly in programmes of social and therapeutic horticulture. Additionally\, we have an information service that seeks to inspire and provide the knowledge so everyone can benefit from gardens and gardening alongside a training and education programme supporting other organisations and practitioners to develop the skills for practice. Each year we see first hand the transformational value that garden can have for people’s health and wellbeing.

SUMMARY:The Nettle Dress
DESCRIPTION:The film follows the experience of a grieving husband\, who honours the life of his wife by spinning and weaving the fibre of foraged stinging nettles into a dress. \nThis is one of 35 preview screenings across the UK\, ahead of the film’s nationwide release in September 2023. So far\, the documentary has been a word-of-mouth success\, playing to packed houses and winning the Audience Award at the Brighton Cinecity Film Festival. \nAllan Brown is a textile artist and father of four. When his wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer\, his foraging\, spinning and weaving took on new meaning and provided solace. The dress took seven years to complete and is woven with 14\,400 feet of thread\, each one representing hours of devoted attention. \nActor Sir Mark Rylance says: “The Nettle Dress is an exquisite\, inspiring film.” \nBOOK YOUR TICKET
