SUMMARY:Community Growing Colour Together Project (Dewsbury)
DESCRIPTION:Growing Colour Together is more than a project\, it’s a MOVEMENT! And our ambition is to create a district-wide\, natural dye colour garden! Working in partnership across the district we want to give everyone the opportunity to ‘have a grow\,’ use what’s grown to make natural dyes\, and learn about the environmental implications of chemical dyes and what we buy. \nWOVEN in Kirklees has been supported by funding from Arts Council England and Kirklees Council to support the development of work in three areas of Kirklees. Each area will work with artists in collaboration to develop knowledge and understanding of art and nature\, with a focus on natural dyes. \nYour artists will put the community central to the project and work with you to develop an outcome for the WOVEN 2023 festival. Together you will explore themes of nature\, textiles\, climate change and wellbeing. \nThese sessions are suitable for adults with a particular focus on inviting women and girls in the community to take part and explore the wellbeing benefits of working with natural dyes\, the land and materials. If you have children with you\, they must be over the age of 5 and be accompanied by an adult at all times. \nCome along and join your artists for these creative natural dye sessions. Taking place in Dewsbury on Wednesdays at Crow Nest Adventure Play Area in Crow Nest Park between now and the WOVEN festival\, find out about the project\, share your ideas and learn how to get involved. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE

SUMMARY:Quilted: Community\, Creativity and Care - Huddersfield
DESCRIPTION:Quilted celebrates the powerful art of quiltmaking. Stitching a quilt can be an act of protest\, a gesture of care\, or an opportunity to connect with other people. Quilts can be personal and heartfelt\, made with a particular individual in mind. Quiltmaking can also be a collective activity: people can work together to explore and share social\, political and creative ideas. \nQuilted represents the work of many hands and reveals multiple stories. The exhibition brings together three distinct groups of quilts to provide a rich conversation about quiltmaking today. \nThe Threads of Survival quilts were produced across the UK by over 160 people during the Covid-19 pandemic. Many of these quilts were made in challenging times and in difficult circumstances. Threads of Survival is an ongoing project and is open to all. Several communities have made new quilts in response to the exhibition as it has toured. The exhibition here\, for example\, features new quilts made by communities in Leeds and Rotherham.  \nThe exhibition also features quilts made by local communities working across Kirklees. These quilts reveal the remarkable creativity and commitment of groups and collectives dedicated to caring for others\, combating isolation and encouraging community action. \nQuiltmaking remains an important medium for artists today. Quilted features a range of quilts made by individual textile artists and makers based in and around Kirklees. These quilts reveal a host of innovative methods\, ideas and narratives. \nThere are lots of ways to explore your creativity with textiles. At Huddersfield Art Gallery: Unit 7\, there is a full programme of talks\, presentations and workshops designed to encourage people to meet\, stitch and learn together.  \nThis event listing is for Huddersfield Art Gallery:Uit 7. Opening hours: Wednesday to Saturday\, 11am – 4pm \nPlease check the Bagshaw Museum listing for opening times and location details.

SUMMARY:Building Bridges with Knitting after WW2; plus Knit & Natter
DESCRIPTION:Ahead of Night on the Knit\, join us for a knit-themed afternoon: first\, hear about how a knitting project helped the reconciliation between Britons and Germans in the aftermath of WW2\, then we’ll ‘knit & natter’ – don’t forget to bring your yarn! \nKnitting for Peace and Reconciliation: the Women’s Co-operative Guild’s remarkable humanitarian project after 1945\nSpeaker: Steven Illingworth \nThis talk will take a new look at the influence and work of the Women’s Co-operative movement during the Second World War. It will argue that the WCG\, who famously introduced the white poppy in 1933\, maintained a coherent pacifist policy throughout the conflict and gave vital support to the ‘victims of aggression’ both during and after the war. \nStay around after Steven’s talk for some knitting and nattering! Bring along whatever you’re working on and join a friendly group of fellow crafters in our bright gallery space. Crocheters (cross-stitchers\, patchworkers….) are welcome too! \nThis is an informal social session\, not a taught workshop\, but you’ll be able to share tips and ideas\, swap patterns and meet new people. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE

SUMMARY:Hudfam: The Huddersfield Origins of the Fair Trade and Sustainability Movement
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a public talk by Professor Bertrand Taithe on the history of Hudfam and its remarkable founder Elisabeth Wilson. \nThis is the story of how Huddersfield came to have one of the first charity shops in the country selling second-hand clothes and fair-trade products. Originally called the Huddersfield Famine Relief Committee\, Hudfam was founded in 1943 to campaign for relief during the Indian and Greek famines in the Second World War. In the 1960s it organised a sale of items made by Chinese refugees in Hong Kong. This was the start of Hudfam’s pioneering sale of fairly-traded handicrafts made in development projects around the world– an idea which became the bedrock of Oxfam’s global development and sustainability goals. \nElisabeth Wilson was a ground-breaking woman: entrepreneur\, fundraiser\, development campaigner\, Quaker\, Buddhist and peace activist. Her fascinating story will be told through her memoirs\, photographs and fair-trade objects. \nThis is a free event\, but donations are very welcome. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE \nBSL interpretation will be available at this event.
