SUMMARY:Memorial Gestures I - Laura Fisher
DESCRIPTION:Holocaust Centre North is showcasing an exhibition of work by their first artists-in-residence. \nThrough the Memorial Gestures Residency Programme\, three artists have been invited to explore Holocaust Centre North’s archive. This contains the stories of 100+ Jewish refugees and Holocaust survivors who made new lives in the North of England. \nArtist Laura Fisher has explored the important role textiles played in some families’ lives. Working with Elinor Sykes from the University of Huddersfield\, Laura has created knitted blankets for visitors to look at\, touch and wrap around themselves. \n“The designs of these blankets are based on artefacts that are part of the collection at Holocaust Centre North. Conveying messages of warmth\, hope\, and solidarity\, and facilitated by organisations such as the Red Cross\, these letters and telegrams were often the only means of communication allowed between concentration camp prisoners and their loved ones in the outside world.” \nOpen 10am – 5pm\, Monday – Thursday only.

SUMMARY:Weaving a Seabed
DESCRIPTION:hcmf// has invited multidisciplinary artist Natalie Sharp to host a weekend long\, drop-in event at MakerWorld. \nUsing second-hand and found fabrics and materials only\, Natalie will guide children and their families in creating a giant woven sea blanket as part of an imagined seabed\, complete with a watery soundtrack. A fully immersive\, underwater experience\, right in the centre of Huddersfield! \nOver the course of two days\, participants can drop by and join in with designing part of the sea blanket as well as learning some basic sound editing skills to help create a soundscape to provide the perfect backdrop to the newly created marine environment. \nOpen to children of any age and their accompanying grownups. SUMMARY:Fabric and Nature in Clay Workshop
DESCRIPTION:We will be using fabric lace\, leaves and fabric wood blocks to create a porcelain trinket bowl and feature buttons. \nThis is a workshop to explore delicate texture from the theme of growing\, and of course textiles and colour. Using a beautiful smooth porcelain clay we will be adding stains to highlight your designs. It’s not a workshop to mass produce but a lovely gentle and mindful process of discovery using high quality porcelain materials. \nEveryone will be able to make 1 small trinket bowl and 20 buttons each included in the cost. Additional items will be charged at a small cost for additional porcelain and firing costs. \nPlease do feel free to bring your own textured fabrics and leaves from plants you love but we will be providing them so don’t worry if you don’t have any. \nThis event is part of the WOVEN community programme. If you have any questions please contact The Clay Mill directly. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE

SUMMARY:Modern Rag Rugging Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Rag Rugging is a technique traditionally used to turn rags into textural rags. \nIn this open ended session you’ll learn two versatile rag rug techniques that can be used to make a piece of wall art\, homewares\, a brooch or more. As rag rugging takes a long time to complete you may not finish your piece in the session (but if you opt to do a brooch you will do) but will go away with tools and skills to complete it. \nThere will be a wide range of fabric scraps\, recycled materials\, colourful rope\, buttons and other things to choose from to make your piece unique. \nThis event is part of the WOVEN community programme. If you have any questions please contact Thread Republic directly. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE

SUMMARY:Nicola Perren & Dionne Swift in conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join two fascinating local textile artists\, Dionne Swift and Nicola Perren\, to hear about their processes and inspirations for their work\, and their experiences of working on collaborative quilts with people within Kirklees and beyond. \nDionne has been creating\, exhibiting and teaching for over 30 years and specialises in free machine embroidery\, with a commitment to drawing\, observing and reacting to her environment. For Dionne\, making is a meditation but her pieces are still imbued with vitality and energy. \nA designer and teacher\, Nicola’s practice is centred around creativity\, play and exploration. Quilts hold a particular fascination for Nicola\, specifically Whole Cloth quilts which can be found around the world\, and she is interested in quilts that are both functional and not. She is working with local communities as an artist on our Growing Colour Together project and is exploring using more natural dyes in her own work. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE \nBSL interpretation will be available at this event.
