SUMMARY:Introduction and Playing with Natural Dyes (Kirkburton)
DESCRIPTION:Join the Growing Colour Together Kirkburton artists Nicola and Seiko for and introduction to working with natural dyes. \nThis exploratory session will introduce you to a number of both core and fun approaches to dying fabric with natural materials. This will include piece dyeing [solid colours]\, bundle dyeing\, the effects of changing the Ph levels and exploring how different fabrics produce a range of results. \nWe will consider how we may take ideas beyond the dye pot into our homes and wardrobes and the ethical and sustainable benefits of natural dyeing. Furthermore\, while we will experiment with a range of dyestuffs\, we will also consider potential development of dyes grown in the local area or our own gardens. \nNatural dyeing can be very straight forward\, and it is easy to achieve quick\, effective and creative results. This session is intended to show how this is possible without deep diving into wider\, but more complex potential directions of mordanting etc. No experience is necessary. \nPlease note\, this session will not go into detail about scouring and mordants – if you are interested\, this information will be included in the Beyond the Basics of Natural Dyeing session\, feel free to sign up for both or just the one. \nBook Your Place

SUMMARY:Community Growing Colour Together Project (Dewsbury)
DESCRIPTION:Growing Colour Together is more than a project\, it’s a MOVEMENT! And our ambition is to create a district-wide\, natural dye colour garden! Working in partnership across the district we want to give everyone the opportunity to ‘have a grow\,’ use what’s grown to make natural dyes\, and learn about the environmental implications of chemical dyes and what we buy. \nWOVEN in Kirklees has been supported by funding from Arts Council England and Kirklees Council to support the development of work in three areas of Kirklees. Each area will work with artists in collaboration to develop knowledge and understanding of art and nature\, with a focus on natural dyes. \nYour artists will put the community central to the project and work with you to develop an outcome for the WOVEN 2023 festival. Together you will explore themes of nature\, textiles\, climate change and wellbeing. \nThese sessions are suitable for adults with a particular focus on inviting women and girls in the community to take part and explore the wellbeing benefits of working with natural dyes\, the land and materials. If you have children with you\, they must be over the age of 5 and be accompanied by an adult at all times. \nCome along and join your artists for these creative natural dye sessions. Taking place in Dewsbury on Wednesdays at Crow Nest Adventure Play Area in Crow Nest Park between now and the WOVEN festival\, find out about the project\, share your ideas and learn how to get involved. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE

SUMMARY:Gardening for Health and Wellbeing - Thrive
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Growing Colour Together project the WOVEN team have put together a series of talks\, events and workshops to help you get started with your colour garden. \nThis online session by Thrive will explore the way gardens and gardening can be accessed and used for health and wellbeing\, including the evidence behind this. Across the presentation we will think about how in everyday life\, through our communities and through health and social care interventions\, gardens can be supportive of societal health and each life journey. \nWe will include practical ideas so that everyone can be more connected to nature through gardens for their own health benefit. The session will include how horticultural therapy links with the use of natural dye plants and some of the aims of our Growing Colour Together project. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE \nAbout Thrive\nThrive is a charity that supports people with ill health and disability to use gardening for health and wellbeing. We have 3 gardens in Birmingham\, London and Reading that support people directly in programmes of social and therapeutic horticulture. Additionally\, we have an information service that seeks to inspire and provide the knowledge so everyone can benefit from gardens and gardening alongside a training and education programme supporting other organisations and practitioners to develop the skills for practice. Each year we see first hand the transformational value that garden can have for people’s health and wellbeing.

SUMMARY:Botanical: a Contemporary Approach to Natural Dyeing
DESCRIPTION:Please come and join us as we celebrate the Growing Colour Together project and the communities of the Kirkburton Parish. \nWith a contemporary approach to natural dyed textiles\, you can observe the large-scale installation Modified made by artists Seiko Kinoshita & Nicola Perren\, engage with the design collection with contributions from local makers\, listen to music and go on a walk through the grounds to the newly created church community garden. \nThis is a creative response to a long-term call to turn areas of Kirklees into Natural Colour Gardens. Over the previous months\, workshops have worked with members of the Kirkburton community to learn about such an approach to gardening\, how to dye textiles with natural materials and how we might utilise mending of textiles to develop more sustainable practices when it comes to our wardrobes and soft furnishings. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE

SUMMARY:Foraging Walk for Natural Dyes
DESCRIPTION:Kayleigh Davis is a natural dye textile artist and is passionate about responsible foraging practices and sharing insight into which plants can be foraged locally for natural dyes\, making this accessible to those wishing to explore natural dyes in their local area. \nWe will meet at the grassy area with a gate next to St Patrick’s Catholic Primary Academy on George Avenue. Good walking shoes are recommended as we may wander off the beaten track. \nAs part of this guided walk\, you can expect an educational journey\, stopping along the way to learn\, share and forage. \nThe walk is expected to take roughly 45 minutes in total. There will be a short demonstration at the end of the session and the walk itself will be a circular so that we will end up where we started. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE

SUMMARY:Growing Colour Together Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our WOVEN 2023 Growing Colour Together Symposium to celebrate the work our artists and communities have created together. This year WOVEN has commissioned seven artists to work with three areas in Kirklees. The artists have worked in partnership with the community planting dye gardens and using what’s grown to make natural dyes for textiles! Hear what they have been up to during this artist and community discussion panel. \nWOVEN has two Post Graduate Research students exploring the Growing Colour Together project. We will be joined by MA researchers Hannah Schofield-Lee and Kayleigh Davis for a presentation on their research and findings so far. \nDebbie Bamford\, of the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) \, will talk about natural dyes used in the textile industry. Natural dyes have been used to colour textiles for over 6000 years. Superseded by synthetic dyes from the late 19th century\, concerns about the environment and pollution form the dye industry have turned thoughts back to the natural world. This talk is a travel through time with commercial use of natural dyes. \nWe will also be joined by two other special guest speakers; Claire Wellesley-Smith\, author of Resilient Stitch and Slow Stitch\, and Bella Gonshorovitz\, author of Grow\, Cook\, Dye and Wear. \nThere will be tours of the Barbara Hepworth building including print and dye facilities with textile samples and techniques to explore throughout the day. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE \nBSL interpretation will be available at this event.

We will be joined by local natural dye artist Kayleigh Davis for an exciting growing colour together inspired workshop as well. \nRefreshments available throughout the session. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE \nAbout Growing Colour Together: Growing Colour Together is more than a project\, it’s a MOVEMENT! And our ambition is to create a district-wide\, natural-dye\, colour garden! We want to give everyone the opportunity to ‘have a grow\,’ use what’s grown to make natural dyes\, and learn about the environmental implications of chemical dyes and what we buy. Growing Colour Together is an evolving project and we want people to join in with the areas that interest you to grow\, make\, create and debate!
