SUMMARY:Introduction and Playing with Natural Dyes (Kirkburton)
DESCRIPTION:Join the Growing Colour Together Kirkburton artists Nicola and Seiko for and introduction to working with natural dyes. \nThis exploratory session will introduce you to a number of both core and fun approaches to dying fabric with natural materials. This will include piece dyeing [solid colours]\, bundle dyeing\, the effects of changing the Ph levels and exploring how different fabrics produce a range of results. \nWe will consider how we may take ideas beyond the dye pot into our homes and wardrobes and the ethical and sustainable benefits of natural dyeing. Furthermore\, while we will experiment with a range of dyestuffs\, we will also consider potential development of dyes grown in the local area or our own gardens. \nNatural dyeing can be very straight forward\, and it is easy to achieve quick\, effective and creative results. This session is intended to show how this is possible without deep diving into wider\, but more complex potential directions of mordanting etc. No experience is necessary. \nPlease note\, this session will not go into detail about scouring and mordants – if you are interested\, this information will be included in the Beyond the Basics of Natural Dyeing session\, feel free to sign up for both or just the one. \nBook Your Place

SUMMARY:Gardening for Health and Wellbeing - Thrive
DESCRIPTION:Join us online for a Growing Colour Together talk from gardening charity Thrive. \nThis online session by Thrive will explore the way in which gardens and gardening can be accessed and used for health and wellbeing\, including the evidence behind this. Across the presentation we will think about how in everyday life\, through our communities\, and through health and social care interventions\, gardens can be supportive of societal health and each life journey. \nWe will include practical ideas so that everyone can be more connected to nature through gardens for their own health benefit. The session will include how horticultural therapy links with the use of natural dye plants and some of the aims of our Growing Colour Together project. \nBook Your Place \nGrowing Colour Together is more than a project\, it’s a MOVEMENT! And our ambition is to create a district-wide\, natural-dye\, colour garden! We want to give everyone the opportunity to ‘have a grow\,’ use what’s grown to make natural dyes\, and learn about the environmental implications of chemical dyes and what we buy. It’s an evolving project and we want people to join in with the areas that interest you to grow\, make\, create and debate\, so this event is part of a series of talks\, events and workshops to help you get started with your colour garden.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Basics of Natural Dyeing (Kirkburton)
DESCRIPTION:This practical session will introduce you to natural dyeing and will include those aspects that often pose a challenge [or brick wall] to natural dying. This session though will show that it is accessible\, can be straight forward and for many\, is what makes this field of creativity so engaging. So\, we will be looking at natural dyeing prosses from plants to powders\, mordants\, scouring and modifiers. \nWe will discuss the viability and use of natural dyeing in communities\, for the individual and how we may embrace its properties for development into products for our home or to wear. \nPlease note\, if you would like to just learn some introductory methods of natural dyeing without all the supplementary information\, then you may prefer to do the session Introduction & Playing with Natural Dyes – feel free to attend both or just one. \nBook Your Place

SUMMARY:Community Growing Colour Together Project (Dewsbury)
DESCRIPTION:Growing Colour Together is more than a project\, it’s a MOVEMENT! And our ambition is to create a district-wide\, natural dye colour garden! Working in partnership across the district we want to give everyone the opportunity to ‘have a grow\,’ use what’s grown to make natural dyes\, and learn about the environmental implications of chemical dyes and what we buy. \nWOVEN in Kirklees has been supported by funding from Arts Council England and Kirklees Council to support the development of work in three areas of Kirklees. Each area will work with artists in collaboration to develop knowledge and understanding of art and nature\, with a focus on natural dyes. \nYour artists will put the community central to the project and work with you to develop an outcome for the WOVEN 2023 festival. Together you will explore themes of nature\, textiles\, climate change and wellbeing. \nThese sessions are suitable for adults with a particular focus on inviting women and girls in the community to take part and explore the wellbeing benefits of working with natural dyes\, the land and materials. If you have children with you\, they must be over the age of 5 and be accompanied by an adult at all times. \nCome along and join your artists for these creative natural dye sessions. Taking place in Dewsbury on Wednesdays at Crow Nest Adventure Play Area in Crow Nest Park between now and the WOVEN festival\, find out about the project\, share your ideas and learn how to get involved. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE

SUMMARY:Weaving a Seabed
DESCRIPTION:hcmf// has invited multidisciplinary artist Natalie Sharp to host a weekend long\, drop-in event at MakerWorld. \nUsing second-hand and found fabrics and materials only\, Natalie will guide children and their families in creating a giant woven sea blanket as part of an imagined seabed\, complete with a watery soundtrack. A fully immersive\, underwater experience\, right in the centre of Huddersfield! \nOver the course of two days\, participants can drop by and join in with designing part of the sea blanket as well as learning some basic sound editing skills to help create a soundscape to provide the perfect backdrop to the newly created marine environment. \nOpen to children of any age and their accompanying grownups. All materials are provided\, but fabric donations are very welcome. Drop in anytime\, no booking required. \nNatalie Sharp is a disabled artist at the forefront of a movement the Quietus has dubbed New Weird Britain\, Natalie Sharp’s music explores non-conventional settings\, participatory performance and choreographed staging. Anti-framework and anti-expectation\, her work encompasses themes of gender\, sexuality\, pain and the body\, involving audiences in worlds they’ve never before experienced. Self-taught and uncompromisingly DIY\, Sharp’s work constantly integrates performer and listener\, removing the idea of consumption and replacing it with collaboration. Her talents as a musician\, costume designer and make-up artist come together in her performance alias Lone Taxidermist\, a surrealist alter ego she has used in collaborations with Gazelle Twin\, and taken on tour with artists such as Jenny Hval.

But letters don’t have to be just pen on paper. \nIn these sessions\, you’ll have the chance to make a small piece of textile art\, which will be posted out to spread some cheer. \nTextile artist Hayley Mills-Styles will show you how to embroider your message using ‘Give a Few Words’ signature yellow thread\, and different ways you could embellish your design. \nNo experience necessary and all materials will be provided – but if you have any favourite fabrics you’d like to include\, please do feel free to bring them along. \nVisit the Give a Few Words project to find out more. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE

SUMMARY:Re-weaving Huddersfield
DESCRIPTION:This one-day workshop will introduce you to the basics of handloom weaving\, tapestry techniques and the potential of found and recycled materials to create new textile ideas. \nStarting outdoors (weather permitting) you will be guided to capture a range of inspiration (shapes\, colours and textures) as we introduce you to the heritage of textiles at the centre of Huddersfield. We will work with photography\, sketching and collage to translate these visuals into a design for your woven cloth. \nWorking in the Barbara Hepworth Building (University of Huddersfield) with an induction into handloom weaving\, the afternoon will focus on weaving your own design using a mix of found yarns/discarded materials and stripped-down garments. \nThis event is part of the WOVEN community programme. If you have any questions please contact the University of Huddersfield directly. \nBOOK YOUR PLACE
