WOVEN Together Community Quilt
June 12 - June 27
WOVEN Together is a community quilt project led by textile artist Dionne Swift.
This project is about collaboration. Historically, quilts have always been masterpieces of community collaboration: often created by a whole village as a wedding gift for a young couple or as a celebration to welcome home lonely travellers. The images portrayed within the tactile tiles are symbolic too; the traditional ‘log cabin’ construction which a yellow centre signifies that there’s a light on in the window to guide you home or a red centre suggests that a warm welcome awaits and there’s a fire on in the hearth.
For the 2021 WOVEN in Kirklees festival Dionne asked communities of quilters (first time and experienced needleworkers) to come together with friends, neighbours or colleagues to make four parts of a repeat block. To work together to design the colour and the pattern, to solve problems and to be creative.
The quilts on display have been created by 15 groups, individuals coming together in a time when physical contact is limited but community means more than ever before.
We thank Dionne for her creativity, time and energy and the skill it has taken to bring all the parts of the project together. We thank everyone who took part in the project to create this wonderful piece of art.
