DESCRIPTION:The UK AIDS Memorial Quilt Display is coming to Wakefield this June and WOVEN is proud to be hosting a weekend of stitch activities alongside the exhibition. Note all events with be hosted in The Factory at Wakefield Exchange. \nSew Queer – On Tour\nSat 6 June 4-6pm\nLed by Thread Republic and Crafty Octopus \n\nSew Queer is a monthly stitch social for LGBTQIA+ folks usually in Huddersfield but for one night only\, is coming to Wakefield. This is a non-taught session for you to bring your own project and craft alongside others. Hosted by Crafty Octopus – Frances Ayres\, who is passionate about creating safe spaces for queer folks that are social and don’t just revolve around bar culture! \n(Please note: this is for 18+ only) \n\nAcross the weekend\nSat 6 – Sun 7 June:\nMy Stitch to You! \n\nJoin Andi Walker\, multidisciplinary artist based in Leeds\, specialising in Constructed Textiles as they take you through a drop in stitch story session.  \nWorking with the stories from the UK Aids Memorial Quilt\, Andi will help you make a personal response to one or more panels. Immerse yourself into the people remembered in the quilts by making your own creative response. Note this may be an emotional activity as you will get to know someone’s story. \nQuilted Postcards \nMeet activist quilt maker\, Chris English\, based in Huddersfield\, as he shares ways to make quilted postcards that you can take home or send to someone special. We would love to know where your postcards end up\, so if you do send them\, don’t forget to send us an image of them being received via social media. \nChris uses mainly recycled materials and makes quilts with a message!  \n\nQuilt pockets of love and remembrance\nWith multi-disciplined Artist\, Maker\, and Facilitator Karen Stansfield\, exploring the art of creative stitch to fashion quilted patch pockets. \nCare\, Compassion and Quilts\nQuilts for Care Leavers (Q4CL) is a national charity that provides handmade quilt ‘hugs’ for young people aged between 18 and 24 who are living independently after their time in care of the Local Authority has come to an end. The quilts are made to promote wellbeing and show these young people they are supported and that someone cares. The quilts are designed to be easily draped around the body\, thereby providing a hug. \nMeltham Quilters will be bringing some of these special quilts for you to see\, touch and “try on”. Quilts are a wonderful comfort for many\, they are handmade with care\, they can be wrapped around us like a hug or on our lap for warmth. \nYou can also join Meltham Quilters for a friendly sewing circle throughout the weekend. DESCRIPTION:​Stories Through Stitch – The Calico Dress\nJoin us for the opportunity to create a stitched patch for the Kirklees Calico Dress and be part of this story of Kirklees. \n​This drop-in workshop is open to all ages and abilities. It’s a chance to slow down and explore wellbeing\, identity\, self-expression\, and a sense of place and belonging through hand stitching. Using simple embroidery and appliqué techniques\, participants will create small\, patch-sized stitched stories inspired by the themes of the Calico Dress. All the patches will later stitched into the dress \, which will be exhibited at WOVEN 2027.

DESCRIPTION:A WOVEN festival highlight in 2025 is The Red Dress\, a globally-travelled collaborative embroidery project at Oakwell Hall this summer. \nThe award winning project was initiated by British artist Kirstie Macleod in 2009 to help marginalised women tell their stories through stitching\, uniting people around the world without borders. The dress now features the work of more than 300 embroiderers from 51 countries and has been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide\, and will now be on display in Kirklees. \nJoin a powerful\, accessible experience on Sunday 29th June with Jane Ensell – Audio Description Artist\, Editor\, and Disability Access Consultant. \nExplore The Red Dress and its surroundings through vivid\, immersive audio description. SUMMARY:Textile Futures
DESCRIPTION:Textile Futures returns for the third time to the University of Huddersfield. \nTextile Futures is a unique fashion and textile careers event and a collaboration between WOVEN\, West Yorkshire Combined Authority and the University of Huddersfield. \nEight secondary schools from West Yorkshire\, with four of them being from Kirklees\, will bring a group of textile students to the Barbara Hepworth Building for the day to learn from fashion and textile academics\, tutors\, industry professionals\, and business leaders locally. \nEvery young person will tour around 4 zones: \n1. Industry Innovators\nThe young people will meet textile professionals working in West Yorkshire and have chances to ask them about their job and career pathway. The Textile Centre of Excellence will be offering advice on local textile apprenticeships and UKFT (UK Fashion and Textiles Association) will give a short introductory presentation about the opportunities in the fashion and textiles sector in the UK now and into the future. \n2. Graduate Showcase and University Tour\nThe date of Textile Futures intentionally coincides with the graduate exhibition on display around the Barbara Hepworth Building. Young people will have the chance to explore the work of the graduates and tour the fashion and textile facilities including embroidery\, knit\, weave and fashion construction. \n3. Creative Workshop\nThis is a chance for the young people to get hands on with a practical and creative activity in the print lab. Delivered by print technicians\, students will create a small artwork to take home and remind them of their day. \n4. Technical Textiles\nThe University of Huddersfield is globally renowned for their technical textile research and innovation. A short walk from the Barbara Hepworth Building\, the students will tour the technical textile labs and learn more about the intersection of textiles with other sectors including biomedical\, agricultural and transport. \nThe students will be welcomed by Professor Parik Goswami\, Director for Research\, Innovation\, and Knowledge Exchange at the University. \nThis is a closed event for selected schools only.
