Threads II – Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival
June 15 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Threads II is a re-imagining of a project that took place last year in partnership with hcmf// (Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival) and Leeds-based organisation UK SAA-UK (South Asian Arts UK). We worked with students from Batley Grammar, who performed an artistic response to the history of Batley’s textiles industry in Huddersfield at hcmf// 2018.
This year, we will deliver a larger performance piece for WOVEN, especially created and delivered within North Kirklees itself. Working with pupils from Batley Grammar and Upper Batley High School and Batley Girls High School and two established performers from SAA-uk, sound artist Alex De Little and Indian Kathak dancer Jyoti Manral.
We will deliver workshops to 20 pupils in each school to discover the hidden history of mills and the evolution of textiles in this region. Pupils will also explore the connection between Britain and India pre-1947, with the stories of the British and Indian women and children who produced textiles in these Yorkshire mills and factories.
The pupils will engage in one full day of workshops in their schools, and then will come together to rehearse for the performance which will take place on Saturday 15 June at Batley Community Centre at 4pm. Free but please book your place here.
