One World Craft Banner
June 12, 2021 - June 27, 2021
“When the skies grow dark a poet stitches stars across the night to guide the way”
This quote was Lemn Sissay’s contribution to a Huddersfield Literature Festival project ‘The Creative Mind’ in 2020, for which six authors and poets were asked for their thoughts on creativity and mental wellbeing. Huddersfield Literature Festival and WOVEN in Kirklees commissioned the One World Craft Group to create a felt banner inspired by the words of the festival’s patron, Lemn Sissay.
“The Creative Mind project was born from the power of poetry and the written word to inspire us, fire up our imaginations and promote mental wellbeing.” Michelle Hodgson, Festival Director, Huddersfield Literature Festival.
The One World Craft Group began creating the banner in January 2020 and presented it to Lemn Sissay at an event at the University of Huddersfield on 11 March 2020 as part of the Huddersfield Literature Festival programme. One World Craft Group founder, Jean York, comments, “This was an immensely meaningful experience which reminded us that we can all heal from those life events that have hurt us…. and our strength and resilience can then inspire others who need support in similar situations”
The One World Craft banner is on display in one of the upstairs windows at Holmfirth Indoor Market until the end of June.
One World Craft Group
The aim of our group is to allow women and men (although we currently have no male contenders!) to creatively work together, share ideas, inspiration and personal stories. Working together, listening and sharing our experiences allows us to better understand each other, build trust and mutual understanding; real friendship has grown in the process of listening to and learning from each other. We also have great fun plus an obvious improvement in English language through conversation whilst we create together. We see our involvement with craft as a peaceful, healing activity that represents all cultural backgrounds and communal creativity allows us to clearly see exactly what we have in common as human beings.
Come and join us! If you would like to know more please email Jean York or call her on 07951 042502
